Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) in Urban Environmental Policy

The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Helsinki, Finland, is announcing one open tenure-track position in

URBAN ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

The field of the position has been specified as urban environmental policy, ”with special emphasis on interdisciplinary methods of environmental policy research”. The position will be located in the discipline of environmental change and policy at the Department of Environmental Sciences. The Department is committed to supporting the operational conditions of the appointee in an appropriate manner, including promoting his or her opportunities to maintain and develop research-related cooperation networks and to supervise postgraduate students in the field.

The assistant professor’s field of teaching and research is urban environmental policy, with special emphasis on the perspectives of the theories and methods of social environmental research as well as on interdisciplinarity. The appointee must hold a doctoral degree in social environmental research and his or her qualifications in both research and teaching should be excellent. Experience of collaboration with natural scientists will be considered an asset.

In addition to conducting research, the duties of the position include the provision of research-based teaching, the development of advanced and postgraduate studies in the field as well as the supervision of Master’s theses and doctoral dissertations and post-doctoral researchers. The assistant professor is expected to develop the interdisciplinary research network in the field by participating in the activities of the Helsinki University Centre for Environment (HENVI) and the network of urban studies professors, for example, to establish and lead an active research group of a high international standard and to acquire external research funding from national and/or international sources.
