Research: Quantitative assessment of materials and energy policy – assessing the implications of introducing EU and UK policy in the field of material and energy policy
You will join a Research Council centre called UK INDEMAND which is a five year initiative to reduce the UK’s energy demand through changing our demand of materials and products across the whole supply chain. Within UK INDEMAND your primary role is to assess the introduction of economy wide policies to deliver energy demand reduction from both a whole systems macro perspective and within individual sectors. This is based on the idea that to reduce energy demand of the UK, we must take a broader perspective than just the energy system, considering the indirect energy implications of lifestyle choices.
You will use a range of quantitative modelling approaches to assess both policies at the EU and UK level. These are likely to include the introduction of economy wide energy demand targets identifying how changes need to be made across the whole economy, adjustments to existing standards and policies in construction and car policy, and the introduction of mandatory warranties for consumer products. In addition, the role will involve the modelling of material flows within the EU and integrate the data introduction existing models being developed by the research team. This could involve applying a range of different methodological approaches such as material flows, input-output modelling, econometric modelling as well as qualitative approaches to assess the attitudes and behaviours of key policy stakeholders. The post will also involve close collaborations within the centre and with other EUED centres.
You will have a problem-orientated approach to research as opposed to being devoted to the development of a specific methodology. You will have a strong desire to engage extensively with key stakeholders as well as working closely with the modellers in developing viable scenario narratives and policy options. This will result in an understanding of the levers, potential mechanisms, and feasibility of demand side tools and policies. You will have a PhD in a related area (or be close to obtaining a PhD) or equivalent relevant experience demonstrating an interdisciplinary approach to problem orientated research.
You will be joining the research team of Professor John Barrett who has a long history in applied and policy relevant research in the field of sustainable consumption and production modelling and climate policy.
