Postdoctoral Researcher, “Sustainable Blue Economy: Doughnut Economics for Island Contexts” – University of Cadiz (Spain)

Deadline: 27 January 2024
Position: Two-Year Post-Doc in the project “Sustainable Blue Economy: Doughnut Economics for Island Contexts”
Institution: Institute of Marine Research (INMAR) at the University of Cadiz
Location: Cadiz, Spain
Salary: 38,500 euros/year (gross)
Start Date: Between 1 March and 1 April, 2024

The Institute of Marine Research (INMAR) at the University of Cadiz is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on an exciting initiative that adapts a place-based methodology based on the ‘Doughnut of social and planetary boundaries’ so that it is relevant and useful to the priorities and interests of island-based societies, especially across the so-called ‘Global South’.

The postdoctoral researcher will help deepen and refine the quantitative and qualitative methods within the ‘Doughnut Unrolled’ framework, which collectively provide a holistic snapshot of a place’s performance that combines local aspirations – to be thriving people in a thriving place – with global connections – both social and ecological.

The applied research will focus on case studies that engage with island-based societies in different social-ecological contexts (exact locations to be confirmed depending on collaborative opportunities arising).

Person Specification:

Eligibility (mandatory)

  • PhD in ecological economics, environmental studies, natural/social sciences, or engineering.
  • Two years of postdoctoral work experience, contractually documented.

Successful candidates should have:

  • Experience in one or more of the following quantitative methods: input–output analysis, life-cycle impact assessment or statistical methods.
  • Excellent communication, writing, and time management skills.

Other desirable skills include:

  • International experience, especially in places across the so-called ‘Global South’.
  • Experience in qualitative research methods, such as semi-structured interviews and/or facilitating co-creative workshops.
  • Knowledge of ‘post-growth’ economics topics (e.g. human well-being, planetary boundaries, Doughnut Economics, degrowth).
  • Experience with existing tools for putting Doughnut Economics into practice in places (i.e. ‘Doughnut Unrolled’).
