1. News from ESEE and its members:

Note from the ESEE Board

With the change of the ISEE secretariat, the past eighteen months have been somewhat trying for ESEE in terms of membership issues, and probably also for other regional societies and for the ISEE itself. Membership registers and renewal were in disarray when the new Secretariat took over, a situation which was not helped by the difficulties with the ISEE website. However, with the efforts of the new Secretariat, and new ISEE initiatives, there is certainly some light in the end of the tunnel.

Many of you may have experienced some of the problems with ESEE and ISEE membership functions a year ago. It appears that some people never received membership renewal notices because the membership database was out of date. Others received the notices but failed to renew their membership despite their best efforts. Still others thought they had successfully renewed but did not end up showing in the membership lists.

The problems with membership renewal left ESEE with a diminished membership base in the early 2006. At the moment, we have around 270 members, of which 90 are students. This is somewhat (over a quarter) less than membership has been in “good years”. It looks as if membership would have declined particularly in Spain and in Germany, the traditional strongholds of Ecological Economics in Europe. Membership has also declined in France, Netherlands, Portugal and Switzerland. On the bright side, membership has slightly increased in Belgium, Ireland, Sweden and Norway.

Several proposals affecting membership will be discussed in the ISEE meeting in Delhi. For example, ISEE will decide on the introduction of a multi-year and perhaps a life membership, which would make life easier for those who are committed to long-term membership in ESEE and ISEE. There is also the perhaps more controversial proposal for the introduction of membership fees to students. Several other changes have already been made or are in the process of being made. Registration for a membership will be taken care of centrally at the ISEE website. The website itself has been changed to improve its reliability. Finally, the membership renewal process has been simplified and it can now be completed online on the ISEE website, simultaneously with the updating of personal membership register data.

There is also a lot that you can do as individual members. Most importantly, please do renew your membership for 2007 and update your membership data as soon as possible. Please encourage your ESEE colleagues to renew, too. Also, please advertise ESEE to like-minded colleagues and students and report reasons for dissatisfaction with the membership renewal process to me (j.paavola@see.leeds.ac.uk). I can often assist you directly, and it is important to know where the problems lie so that they can be raised within ESEE and with ISEE.

I personally put the new renewal system to the test for the writing of this contribution. I can confirm that I completed the renewal of my membership for 2007 (including updating of my personal membership register information) in three minutes, without experiencing any problems. This surely has earned my sympathies to the new Secretariat. Assure yourselves of the smooth functioning of the new membership renewal system by visiting the ISEE website at https://www.ecoeco.org/login.php

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in Delhi in a few weeks!

Jouni Paavola

ESEE elections 2006 completed

ESEE has just finished elections for the board. 2 posts for vice presidents and 8 ordinary board positions were up for election. 202 ballots sent out and 55 (27%) returned. The ballot was therefore quorate since over 20% were returned.

The results were:

Ballot for Vice President posts

Paula Antunes 41 votes
Sigrid Stagl 47 votes

Sigrid and Paula are both elected as vice presidents of the ESEE

Ballot for ESEE Board Members

Wendy Kenyon 43 votes
Tatiana Kluvankova-Oravska 35 votes
Ines Omann 35 votes
Karen Refsgaard 35 votes
Esther Velazquez 34 votes
Janne Hukkinen 28 votes
Roldan Muradian 27 votes
Unai Pascual 23 votes
Igor Matutinovic 20 votes
Bernd Siebenhuener 20 votes
Maria Nijnik 17 votes

Wendy, Tatiana, Ines, Karen, Esther, Janne, Roldan and Unai are elected as ESEE board members. I am sorry that Igor, Bernd and Maria did not make it this time. New opportunities will be offered!

As president, I will first of all welcome the elected members to three hopefully very interesting years on the board. The result of the election gives a good mix of 'fresh blood' and continuity. The result implies that Wendy and Karen continue respectively as secretary and treasurer. There are a lot of issues, which the board needs to look into. I hope I will not ‘bully’ you too much with various questions and demands in the coming years…

Finally, I would like to thank the election committee – Jouni Paavola, Felix Rauschmayer, Inge Rřpke and Juan Sánchez – for an excellent job in supporting the election process.

Ballot for constitutional amendment

At the ESEE membership meeting in Lisbon in 2006 we discussed to institute an election committee to support the election process.

As 48 out of 51 members voting on the issue accepted the proposed amendment to the constitution, § 5.2.2 now reads: “An election committee is responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the elections and encouraging that enough nominees stand to make elections competitive. The board selects the committee. It shall consist of four members, normally two members from the board and two external ESEE members. No person can be a member of the election committee for more than 6 years.

The Secretary administers the elections on behalf of the election committee. Nominations for election to the Board shall be made in writing to the Secretary supported by five Members eligible to vote and must be received at the Administration office no later than the date specified by the board for the receipt of such nominations.”

The European Society for Ecological Economics (ESEE), in co-operation with the German associations for ecological economics VÖÖ and VÖW, invite you to meet in Leipzig for the 7th international conference.
