Position: Post Doc  Research Associate : Political Ecology (e.g. new conflicts in the course of social-ecological transformations, changing geopolitical and Nord-South relations, more-than-human methodologies)
 
Location: BOKU University Vienna
 

Extent of employment: 40 hours per week  

Duration of employment: as of now, limited to a period of 6 years 

Workplace: 1070 Vienna, Schottenfeldgasse 29 

Allocation in compliance with the Collective Agreement for University Staff to job group: B1 lit. b

Gross monthly salary: (depending on previous eligible experience) at least: € 4.752,30 (payable 14 times per year)  

The Role

The Institute of Social Ecology (SEC) is a team-oriented research environment that encompasses  natural and social sciences as well as humanities in the field of inter- and transdisciplinary sustainability research. The position is associated with the professorship of Social Ecology (Univ. Prof.  Dr. Melanie Pichler) and is expected to conduct individual and collaborative social science research  on social-ecological transformations that is connected to quantitative and qualitative research  approaches at SEC. Specifically, the person is expected to conduct a post doc project in the field of  political ecology (e.g. new conflicts in the course of social-ecological transformations, changing  geopolitical and Nord-South relations, more-than-human methodologies) and develop an  interdisciplinary research profile in this field. 

Responsibilities 

  • Participate in and apply for third party funding 
  • Publish in scientific journals and present research at national and international conferences Teach individual and collaborative courses in BA, MA and/or PhD programs Collaborate with different stakeholders 
  • Participate in and organize third mission activities 
  • Participate in self-governance and institutional development at the institute, department  and university level 

Required skills and qualifications 

  • Doctorate degree / PhD in a field of interdisciplinary sustainability research (e.g. political  ecology, natural resource management, socio-ecological economics) or social science (e.g.  human geography, political science, development studies, sociology, social anthropology) Language skills: English, German, other languages depending on the research focus
  • Experience in and proven ability to conduct qualitative social research in the field of  political ecology or adjacent research fields 
  • Experience in interdisciplinary sustainability research (e.g. integration of qualitative and  quantitative data, integration of knowledge from natural and social sciences) Collaborative and communicative skills for working in an interdisciplinary team Proven ability to publish in international journals 
  • Teaching experience and didactic skills 

Desirable skills and qualifications 

  • Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding 
  • Skills for and experience in third mission (e.g. non-scientific writing, engagement in civil  society initiatives)
